Long Division- post 4 out of 5

Now that your child has mastered the two previous steps, lets dive deeper into the beautiful lake of long division!

Before moving on to step three, ensure that your child has mastered 1digit by 1digit with no remainders.

Step Three

Remember even though your child/ the child you are working with has mastered the previous steps it still important to have them recite the steps as they solve more complex problems.

2 digit by 1 digit long division, with no remainders or no zeros involved! Lets go!!

Hint: Remember division and multiplication go hand in hand! Remind the child of that also!

Present the child with a problem written like this : 3 ➗ 63=

Ask the child to solve the problem using long division, and observe what he or she does first.

The first thing that should be done is to rewrite the problem.

Like this →     3⟌63 ...... note that the line above is supposed to stretch over the number 63

Now let's look at the first number of the dividend, it's 6 right? Have the child recall the first step!

So we are dividing, we must divide the first number of the dividend - 6 by the divisor 2

We say 3 into 6 or 6 divided by 3 is-

          2
3⟌63       notice that the quotient 2 is written directly about the dividend 6.

The problem isn't finished yet, we have only covered the first step!

What do we do now? Recall the steps!
We multiply!!
Just like the previous problems, we multiply the quotient 2 by the divisor 3!

     2
3⟌63
    6                  (2 ✖ 3= 6 )

notice that the six is written directly below the first digit of the dividend.

We are halfway through!

Hint: if  the child you are working with is having difficulty understanding the division and multiplication you can use visuals to help them. Counting materials that they can manipulate would be useful, or they can even draw the counters. Sometimes children doubt themselves even though they may know their multiplication and division tables. Remember, it's quite okay if they are doubtful . The use of counting materials will help and overtime they won't need it at all. The visual representations help with developing the child's understanding.

We have divided and multiplied now what is our next step?
Have the child recall the rhyme or acronym that was taught to remember the steps.

Subtract

Now we must subtract the 6 written below from the 6 that makes up the dividend.

     2
3⟌63
  -
   6

0       notice the zero is written below the 6.

Lets move on to the next step, which is to compare!

LOok------- 2
                3⟌63
               -
                   6

0       let's compare, look at the problem, is all the numbers dealt with in the dividend? Are there any excess or remainders from the first number of the dividend?

HINT: remember to always use the correct terminology when teaching maths, and always have the child use the correct mathematics terms as well.

Now that we have compared and we are sure that nothing can be further worked out with the first number of the dividend, it is safe to move on to the final step!

Bring Down!

     2
3⟌63
  -
   6

0      look at the problem what do we need to bring down?

If you said the second number of the dividend then you are right!

remember to always motivate your learner, by giving positive feedback and positive comments when doing math. We are trying to make the child good at math so we need to make it the least stressful. A little positivity can motivate the child enough to succeed

We are bringing down the 3, so let's do that.

                        2
                    3⟌63
                    -
                       6

                      0
3------notice that the 3 is written directly below the 3 above, because it is the same 3, just that we bought it down to work with it.

So you completed ALL the steps right?

you ain't finished yet, hold up! 😲😏😅

And this is where you start all over, now you understand the name LONG division 😵😍

In order to complete the problem you must work through the steps as shown about with the second number of the dividend.

GO AHEAD!

Recall the steps in order

Line up numbers accurately

Place numbers just as it was shown above!

I will be waiting for you at the end!

done now?

Assuming that you did not cheat and just click down to the end of this page, your completed problem should look like this........

                                             2 1
                  3⟌63
                 -
                    6

                    0
                              3
                -
                      3
                      0

Try a few more problems like these! Remember practice makes perfect! Ensure that the child practices several problems like these.

Hug yourself you did a good job today!!

See you on our next post!
