Long Division- post 2 out of 5

Today we will be exploring the basics that every child should know before attempting long division. Continue reading to discover what your child needs to know in order to master long division!

By the time long division is introduced children are already aware of what it is. They should have had prior experience solving division problems, as long division is the last stage in division.

Step One
Ensure your child is fluent with the multiplication and division tables.
Example: 2 X 2= 4
    4➗ 2= 2

This is very important as every other step in solving long division problems is reliant on these tables!!

Step two

Teach the steps in long division.

What are the steps in long division?

The steps are to:        Divide                             Multiply                           Subtract                              Compare
                                Bring Down

IN THAT ORDER!

But the main factor here is is to find a fun way to help the child remember the steps in the order it should be done!!

Does: divide
Mc. Donald's- multiply
Sell-  subtract
Cheese- compare
Burger- bring down

Recognize the way in which the acronym works in remembering the order of the steps?
Ensure that your child remembers the order of the steps.
This is just one example of how it can be done, but you can create your own acronym to match your child's interests. Remember this is just an example! The most important thing here is to memorize the steps in order!!
